Disclaimer feature

to protect a page by displaying an overlay that must be confirmed upon entering

  • an opt-in cookie can be set, for returning customers
  • multiple options to define confirmation behaviour
  • Disclaimer inheritance to protect entire branches

The Disclaimer feature generates a Modal Overlay that protects a page from being accessed. Only after confirming the Disclaimer, the page is displayed.

on this page:

Introduction

The Disclaimer feature provides a solution to "protect" a page from access unless the website visitor accepts certain terms & conditions stated. It is displayed as a overlay that is created with a Modal Content template. There are several options how the Disclaimer can be accepted with the possibility to set a session cookie (so the choice made gets stored until the browser session ends). If a Disclaimer is denied, the protected page will not load, but instead, the visitor is redirected to a designated Disclaimer Decline page (e.g. the previous page).

A page gets protected by defining the Disclaimer path in its Page Properties. It is also possible to protect entire branches (e.g. /institutional-customers) by adding the Disclaimer to the parent node from where it gets inherited to all its children.

Display & Usage

Once a portal visitor clicks on a link that leads to a protected page, the Disclaimer is loaded as modal overlay on the targeted page. This page can only be accessed if the conditions stated in the Disclaimer text are agreed upon. If the Safe Option Opt-in Displayed is chosen, a checkbox is displayed that offers the visitor to rembember the choice in order not to see the Disclaimer anymore until the session expires (until the website tab gets closed).

If a portal visitor declines to agree to the Disclaimer, he gets directed to a configurable page or just back to the page where he came from. It is also possible not to offer a decline option by not filling in the Decline Button Label. This way, a visitor must agree the the Disclaimer or leave the website.

Inheritance of Disclaimer

If a page becomes Disclaimer protected (set in its Page Properties), all its child pages inherit this setting as well. This way, entire areas (e.g. /institutional-customers) can be protected by only adding the Disclaimer to the one parent page. If a visitor enters the website through a direct link to a child page, the Disclaimer gets shown anyway.

Editorial hint:

Protecting an entire portal

When adding the Disclaimer to every partent node of a site, the entire website can only be entered by accepting the Disclaimer.

Use the Disclaimer for important messages

The Disclaimer can also be used to display important or temporarily displayed messages for the customer. In this case, the Safe Option: No User Option, BUT Saved could be chosen and the Accept Button Label defined as "I understand" or "Got it".

Disclaimer acceptance options

The Disclaimer acceptance options can be set via the Safe Option dropdown in the Disclaimer component. They define whether a cookie gets stored that expires at the end of the session, stating that the Disclaimer was already accepted or that no cookie gets stored (meaning that every calling up of a child page would load the Disclaimer).

Opt-in Displayed

This option renders a checkbox with a configurable text above the Accept Button. If the portal visitor checks the checkbox, a cookie is set that lasts until the end of the session.

=> so this option is used to actively let the portal visitor choose to be remembered or not (opt-in) until the end of the session

No User Option, NOT Saved

With this option, no checkbox is offered and no cookie gets set. This means, that if the Disclaimer was set on a parent page, on calling up a child page, the Disclaimer is displayed again.

=> use this option to always display the Disclaimer on every page

Attention:

It is not recommended to use this option on a page that has child pages because the Disclaimer would be loaded every time a visitor opens a child page.

No User Option, BUT Saved

With this option, no checkbox is offered, but a cookie that lasts until the end of the session is set.

=> use this option to not offer the opt-in but remember the choice until the end of the session

Disclaimer set-up

For a fully functionable Disclaimer feature, the Disclaimer overlay page must be set up, a Disclaimer Decline page be linked to and, in the Page Properties of the page that shall be protected by the Disclaimer, the Disclaimer Path be defined.

Disclaimer overlay page

The Disclaimer itself is created with a Modal Content Page. On there, a Columns component with a Layout of 1 Column (100%) is added that serves as the container for all other components. By setting the Offset Left and Right, the width of the Disclaimer content can be defined.

Inside the Columns component, all other components must be placed. The Disclaimer text content can be created with any component available in the Sidekick (e.g. Text With Image). Below the text content, the Disclaimer component is placed, available in the Common Forms component group.

Disclaimer Path in Page Properties

On the page that shall be protected by the Disclaimer, the Disclaimer Path has to be set in its Page Properties. Please note that all child pages of this page are also protected. The path gets inherited.

Disclaimer Decline page

If the Decline option is offered (by setting the Decline Button Label and Path in the Disclaimer component), the portal visitor gets directed to the Decline Page if the Disclaimer is declined. This page can either be any other content page or a designated Decline page that is set up with a Standard Content Page and contains relevant information.

For example on www.erste-am.at, the entire Institutional Investors area is Disclaimer protected. If a portal visitor declines the Disclaimer, he gets redirected back to where he came from, the Private Investors area.

Disclaimer component

In the Disclaimer component of the Common Forms group, the Disclaimer Accept and Decline Buttons and the Safe Option are configured. It is placed as last component inside the Columns component on the Disclaimer overlay page.

Please see the Disclaimer component help page for more information.
