Most important facts:
- for every image, only upload one rendition in a high enough resolution
- when added to a component, crop the image to the desired dimensions
- if an image is not used in a wide screen Text with image, Hero, News or Options component, a resolution of 570px x 380px is sufficient
- to be on the safe side and be able to use an image for every component, upload a dimension of 1600px x 1000px
Recommended image file dimensions
General
It is recommended to only upload one rendition per image. This image must be in a sufficient resolution in order to be added to any available component. In the component's image tab, it can then be cropped in order to display the desired image area. Therefore, it is recommended to upload all images with a minimum dimension of 570px x 380px if not used in components, that can display wider images. So an image that serves all components would have a dimension of 1600px x 1000px.
Please note that in a text with image component, the original size of an image can be displayed. So if an image shall cover the entire main content width, it should have a minimum width of 1170px.
If an image is used in special graphic components such as Hero, Superhero, Options or a News archive teaser, the respective dimensions must be considered as stated below.
Teaser boxes are widely used and are therefore of great importance. In order for every teaser type to be displayed in a sufficient resolution, it is recommended to use at least a dimension of 570px x 375px (large teaser type). Nevertheless, here are the recommended dimensions for each teaser type:
For the news feature, there are currently two special teasers boxes available. The recommended dimensions are:
News Archive teaser
Please note that the centered area of 1170px x 250px will always be visible, independent of the screen width (of the device used). Therefore, please put the important image message within this height:

News Timeline teaser
Use only squared size (quadratic) images.
Supported video formats
Superhero, Multimedia Video
In the Superhero and the Multimedia Video components, it is possible to add local videos, that are stored in the DAM. The only format supported is .mp4 with video codec H.264 ( MPEG-4 AVC part 10 avc1; general format profile: Base Media -not version 2 or higher as iOS will not play the video; codecId: isom mp41/avc1) and audio codec MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) (see Wikipedia for more information). So please make sure that your source (agency) delivers the video with the correct format (in order for most operating systems, such as iOS or OSX, to be able to run the videos). Video codec informations can be checked by MediaInfo software.
Additionally, please always keep in mind that videos in the Multimedia Video component can also be called up from mobile devices. We therefore strongly recommend to limit the file size to the least possible compression rate, that still satisfies your demands.
For video compression and conversion, there are multiple free and easy to use tools available, such as the VLC video player. For more information how to use the VLC converter, please visit this instruction page.
Common image element
The image element is used in all components that allow basic image editing. Its main purpose is the ability to crop the image in order to produce the desired image sector to be displayed. This is important as the GEM guideline how to use images states, that every image shall only be uploaded once to the DAM and then, depending on where it is used, be cropped accordingly.
